We joined a series of private  groups almost 2 years ago owned and run by one person. We found 95%+ of our successful meetups through those groups as the members were thoroughly checked out and the owner of the groups organized several functions a month. Several months later we were her co-admins and after the groups got to be too un manageable her and I decided to partner up and create a website. The verification process is still extremely strict to ensure users are who they say they are and to keep out those with less than honorable intentions. There is also a non-disclosure agreement to sign adding an additional layer of protection to peoples identities.
