I was looking for a off topic category and was told 'this is the place.' My wife and I will be moving to Ottawa. What I'm trying to figure out is... Quebec or Ontario? Or is the difference marginal? I know about higher taxes in Quebec. But how high are the taxes? One of my children is not bilingual, is there a chance he will be alienated in the Gatineau schools because he doesn't speak french? What we are looking for in the community is being more laid back, hanging out with the neighbors...Any in put would be helpful.

its all about the neaborhoods

Not speaking french in a french speaking province is not a great idea. If you can get them some lessons before you move. I don't find Quebec to be friendly or neighborly at all.

where i am its pretty chill, im in a rich neaborhood (not saying i am just lucky to find cheap rent lol) and find some people like to chat but if your looking for closeness with neabors or there kids its kinda hard. schools have turned out pretty well and my little brothers get along with everyone so theres that, quebec i cant really give an opinion because i havent been there myself sorry

as a couple where one grew up in "the rest of Canada"and one grew up in Quebec...We both agree that Ont. Is where it's at. Nice thing about Ottawa is you get to enjoy both worlds.

Seriously for us it was the politics that have made our families leave. As in if you have young school age kids and such ESP if they are not fluent in French. The rent is higher in Ottawa, but licence plates and taxes are higher in Gatineau.

Hope this helps
